How-To-Dress-For-Tiff-2014-main-3

The red carpet style competition is notoriously stiff. Full time teams dedicated to the “look”, relationships with the most acclaimed designers, back-up attire for every event- it seems impossible for anyone (who isn’t an A-lister) to keep up. Except for us. We have every affair attended to, day to night, power lunches to black tie soirees. Slim fit suiting, creative details, trends and formalwear covered- for slickly understated attire to coolly stand apart from the crowd.

How To Dress For The 2014 Film Festival With David Cormican

Film festival style has gone viral. We want you poised and primed to take over any carpet with event-ready looks that outshine the movers and shakers- one suit, shirt and pocket square at a time. To illustrate this years hottest looks we’ve got local Toronto producer David Cormican– in for his very one tiff. style makeover.

Film Festival: Black Tie

As the name suggests, black tie immediately implies formal; it does not mean yielding to the same overdone aesthetic as the rest of the world. What do we mean? We are simply suggesting a step away from the “uniform”- black tuxedo, white shirt, pre-tied bow tie- and opting for a look that packs a bigger punch. Swap out the black blazer for a fresh, off-white shawl collar jacket; this change alone will transform the entire appearance and undoubtably ensure that you stand out from the crowd. Pair it with a classic lapel pin, silk pocket square and a self-tie bow tie to have every essential covered.

Looking for more? If you’re the daring type, try a shorter hem to show off those mankles. Key to this look are the no-show socks; vital to avoid ruining feet and shoes.

Film Festival: Red Carpet

Unlike major music awards, fashion shows and other film and television red carpets, tiff. is all about understated cool. Leave those sequinned jackets, diamond chains, and square-toed shoes in the closet in favour of something clean, refined and effortless. As esteemed Brit designer Hardy Amies once said “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgot all about them.” That’s exactly what the tiff. red carpet calls for.

To assist in achieving this look, we’ve taken our classic three-piece Moods of Norway suit in a bold, Cobalt blue, paired it with a sharp, dot motif shirt, minimal wooden pocket square and a pair of plain toe Oxfords. This look effortlessly balances some of the hottest trends of the season without going overboard. A lapel flower lends an extra hint of personality.

Film Festival: Screening

Many people forget that tiff. isn’t just about celebrities, VIPs and films, but also a can’t-miss networking event. This makes dressing the part ultra crucial- you never know who you’ll meet and where. Going to every movie screening in a tuxedo is not a viable option, but looking neat, businesslike and urbane is imperative.

We’ve paired a narrow pair of cotton trousers with a microprint shirt, layered under a sweater and sport coat. This is an easy way to make a statement without going overboard and can be adapted to the ever-changing Toronto weather. Keep or shed layers and always look pulled together.

Film Festival: After Party

Everyone adores a party, especially when frequented by Hollywood hotshots. As with everything tiff., loud and obnoxious isn’t going to get you anywhere, but neither is looking dull or dated. An after party is the right time to showcase your stellar personality by mixing trendy pieces with classic staples. For this look we’ve paired fan favourite Zanerobe with a classic Mandarin collar jacket by Tiger of Sweden. The look is formal enough to get you in, and edgy enough to make you stand out.
