Don’t get lazy just because it’s winter. It is important to look your best regardless of season and though winter requires a little more planning it is possible to look great and be warm at the same time. Here are some tips on what to watch for when sorting out your wardrobe for the winter season.
Winterize Your Wardrobe
We live in Canada and the sooner you accept that fact the happier and warmer you’ll be. As such, investing in a separate winter wardrobe is essential not only to your overall health but also for your personal image and style.
- Step 1: Invest in an appropriate winter coat. We recommend at least two styles, one designated for casual wear (Like our NOBIS or Moose Knuckle Bombers) and one for business/formal occasions (Like our Alpaca wool coat by Hilton).
- Step 2: Get a pair of good winter boots.
- Step 3: Get acquainted with “winter fabrics”. Forget about your light weight cotton trousers and suits and go for something with a little more weight and substance like wool. Here are some great examples of how you can work wool into your winter wardrobe.
Stay Bright
Winter isn’t code for being drab and boring. In fact, nothing can be more uplifting and energizing than throwing some colour in to your winter wardrobe. An easy way to work colour in to your daily style is through accessories like a hat, gloves, scarves and sneakers. On the other hand if you’re looking for something a little bolder there are always options like a pair of bright chinos, a check suit or even a red parka. Bottom line is no matter how you wear it try to incorporate some colour into your style this season.
Keep Winter Out
This is one of our biggest fashion don’ts, when people wear their “winter gear” into the office. You wouldn’t sit at home with your winter boots and toque on, so why would you at work? Don’t look like a kid coming in from recess, make appropriate provision at work. Keep a set of dress shoes at your desk at all times so when you get in you can easily change out of your winter boots into something more professional and if you really feel that cold at work that you need a toque, we suggest investing in a small heater to place under your desk to help warm you up.
Salt Free
Salt is like an infection, the longer you leave it unattended the more damage it will do. Which is why we can’t stress enough the importance of getting your clothes especially your trousers and coats dry cleaned regularly during the winter months. As for your shoes, don’t let salt stains go unnoticed. There are some easy tips and tricks you can do at home to keep them salt free. Here’s a great video that shows you how.
Accessorize
Men have this habit of just grabbing and going when it comes to accessorizing their outfits. Remember, it’s all in the details and it is important to understand that not all gloves and scarves are created equal. While leather gloves and cashmere scarves can be worn casually and formally, thick knitted scarves, touques and flipper gloves are best suited for casual outings. Best thing to do is to keep two sets of accessories, one for business/formal and one set for casual/social.
